Beginner’s Overlocking Course
In the Beginner's Overlocking course, where we will teach you the basics of this essential sewing technique! We will explore the art of overlocking, a sewing method that involves using a special machine to finish the edges of fabric, prevent fraying, and create a professional-looking seam.
This course is designed for anyone who is interested in learning the art of overlocking, or how to use their overlocker, whether you are a beginner or an experienced sewer looking to expand your skills. Throughout this course, we will provide step-by-step instructions on the techniques and tools needed to create beautiful and functional overlocked seams.
We will start by discussing the different types of overlock machines and cover the tools and materials needed to start your overlocking project, including thread, needles, and fabric.
We will dive into the specifics of each overlocking technique, including how to thread your machine, adjust the tension, and create different types of stitches. We will also cover how to overlock seams on various types of fabric, including knits, woven fabrics, and sheer fabrics.
By the end of this course, you will have learned how to create a variety of overlocked seams, including flatlock, rolled hem, and 3-thread and 4-thread overlock stitches. You will also have gained a thorough understanding of the techniques and tools needed to create beautiful and functional overlocked seams. Materials are provided but please ensure you have spare needles and overlocking thread for your machine.

Cost: $60 for Term 2, 2024 (2-week course). Basic supplies included. Bring your own sewing machine or contact us to book a machine to use in class.
This activity is a Learn Local activity, with costs subsidised through the Victorian State Government's Adult and Community Further Education (ACFE) program in partnership with the Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre.
Limited to 8 participants
Please contact us if you would like to borrow an overlocker. If you will be using your own (which is preferable as machines can be quite different), please ensure your machine is in working order. If you would like assistance with this, you are welcome to join one of our free Sewing Circle sessions prior to the commencement of the Overlocking course on 18 June. COVID-Safe
In order to keep everyone involved with the Ballarat East Neighbourhood House safe, we recommend wearing a face-mask when practical to do so and using hand sanitiser regularly. Please do not attend activities with the Ballarat East Neighbourhood House if you have cold/flu symptoms. We will happily refund any pre-paid registration if you are unable to attend due to illness or potential COVID-19 exposure.

Online Forms
If you provide personal details during your visit to the BENH website, then BENH only use and disclose your personal information for the purpose for which it was collected. Any other type of use and disclosure will require your consent or be in accordance with prescribed exemptions under privacy laws.

Cancellation Policy
Ballarat East Neighbourhood House (BENH) reserves the right to cancel activities if the required minimum number of participants enrolled prior to the activity starting date is not met. A full refund will be given for payments received.
In the case that the activity teacher is unable to attend due to illness or an unexpected change of circumstances, the class may be postponed to a later date or cancelled. If the class is postponed and the rescheduled date does not suit a participant, a refund may be requested.

Fee refunds are not automatic and must be applied for in writing to the Manager.
