Intermediate Sewing Course: Enhancing Your Sewing Skills

Skill Level Required: Intermediate ("I Know The Basics")

Pre-requisites:

  • Proficiency with your sewing machine
  • Ability to thread the machine and manage bobbins with ease
  • Capable of troubleshooting and resolving basic machine issues
  • Solid understanding of sewing machine tension
  • Experience in changing machine needles
  • Successful completion of the Beginner’s Class
  • Important: Please bring a well-maintained, recently serviced, or new sewing machine. We are unable to repair sad machines during the class. Ensure you have the manual for your specific machine model due to the variety of types available. See also note below re additional materials and equipment you will need to supply at your own cost.

Course Outline: In this engaging course, participants will delve into the art of garment construction and pattern modification. By the end of the sessions, you will have crafted a custom-fit gathered skirt and a lined coat perfect for Winter, enhancing both your sewing skills and wardrobe.

  • Sewing Machine Mastery: Refresh your knowledge on machine maintenance and safety to ensure smooth sewing experiences.
  • Pattern Reading and Adjustment: Learn how to interpret and modify sewing patterns to fit personal measurements and style preferences.
  • Garment Fitting Techniques: Gain expertise in fitting garments to achieve professional-looking results.
  • Sewing Complex Garments: Tackle more challenging sewing projects including setting sleeves, creating linings, and sewing structured garments.
  • Advanced Sewing Skills: Master the techniques of making buttonholes and other detailed work that elevate the finish of your garments.

This course is designed for individuals who are comfortable with the basics of sewing and are ready to take their skills to the next level, focusing on precision, fit, and more professional finishing techniques. Whether you aim to refine your hobby skills or move towards advanced sewing practices, this course will provide the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to boost your confidence and capability in sewing complex garments.

Cost: $100 for Term 3, 2024 (8-week course). 

Important note re additional costs: Please note there are also materials and equipment you will need to provide yourself, to a cost of up to approximately $150. There are ways to reduce this cost through consultation with us if this is not within your means. On registration you will receive information about the additional requirements you will need to provide prior to the commencement of the class.

This activity is a Learn Local activity, with costs subsidised through the Victorian State Government's Adult and Community Further Education (ACFE) program in partnership with the Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre.

Please note: All Ballarat East Neighbourhood House activities are for 18 years plus unless otherwise specified. Please contact us if you have any questions about this.

Registrations are non-transferrable.

COVID-Safe
In order to keep everyone involved with the Ballarat East Neighbourhood House safe, we recommend wearing a face-mask when practical to do so and using hand sanitiser regularly. Please do not attend activities with the Ballarat East Neighbourhood House if you have cold/flu symptoms. We will happily refund any pre-paid registration if you are unable to attend due to illness or potential COVID-19 exposure.

    The Cancellation and Refund Policies form part of the Activity Terms and Conditions which are available in full online.

    Cancellation Policy

    Ballarat East Neighbourhood House (BENH) reserves the right to cancel activities if the required minimum number of participants enrolled prior to the activity starting date is not met. A full refund will be given for payments received.

    In the case that the activity teacher is unable to attend due to illness or an unexpected change of circumstances, the class may be postponed to a later date or cancelled. If the class is postponed and the rescheduled date does not suit a participant, a refund may be requested.

    Refund Policy

    Fee refunds are not automatic and must be applied for in writing to the Manager.

    The following will be taken into account before a Refund is issued:

    • Approved fee refunds are only processed after the fees have been cleared through the bank account.
    • A student excluded, suspended, or expelled under a BENH/Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre/ Wendouree Neighbourhood Centre policy or procedure is not entitled to a refund (except where any Commonwealth or State legislation or code of practice provides otherwise).
    • Where the student ceases training of their own volition prior to the midway point of the program (defined as midway through unit completion, or midway through time period of course, whichever is the earlier), the maximum fee refund will be 50% of the total fee payment.
    • Where the student ceases training of their own volition after the midway point of the program as defined above, no refund is payable.
    • Refunds will not be issued after course commencement except in exceptional circumstances or where funding guidelines stipulate this requirement. In exceptional circumstances a participant may apply in writing for special consideration of a refund for the following bereavement, hospitalisation and/or unexpectedly having to assume carer’s responsibilities.
    • BENH will not issue refunds for a change in working hours; inconvenient travel; moving interstate; job change or change of career direction or change of mind.
    • Actual attendance in class by the student will not be considered when assessing a refund request.
